Wellbeing

In November 2018 Beam’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Policy was introduced. The Change team, led by Mrs. Kryeziu has been instrumental in providing essential training for staff.

In 2023, we were again awarded the Wellbeing Award for Schools, the award is built on eight objectives which epitomise best practice. Amongst these objectives, the school must:

  • be committed to promoting and protecting positive emotional wellbeing and mental health
  • regard wellbeing and mental health as the responsibility of everyone
  • actively promote positive staff wellbeing.

Every class in the school has a nominated Wellbeing Ambassador and a designated “safe space”. These ambassadors, set up activities during lunchtimes to help improve the wellbeing of their peers. The school has signed up to take part in Education for Well-being – INSPIRE Primary Trial. The programme has been influenced by the protective behaviours approach. The focus is on mental health awareness within the context of developing safety behaviours. The relevant staff will be trained by the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families.

To raise awareness of Mental Health, the school’s web site had a page dedicated to Mental Health and Well Being thus providing support and advice to the larger community. In addition, Mrs. Huskie (Beam’s Parent Support Adviser) has hosted several workshops and coffee mornings for parents around the theme of Mindfulness and coping with stress. Whilst Mrs. Huskie is off on a year’s sabbatical to travel we work closely with the Local Authority’s Early Help team.

These are on-going endeavours as we aim to de-stigmatise talk and engagement around mental health and improve the overall wellbeing of the staff, pupils and parent community.
